How to Prepare for Your In Home Lifestyle Newborn Session

Welcoming a child into this world is such an exciting time. They grow so fast and you want to capture all of those tiny details…

My style is Fine Art Lifestyle, which means that I will come into your home and beautifully capture this fleeting time in your life.

When to schedule your newborn session:

Do you want photos of the baby asleep? If yes, then book your session within the first two weeks after the birth. If you want playful and awake photos, then wait until 4 weeks.

Think about your vision of what you want the photos to look like and talk to your photographer. I shoot more lifestyle and love capturing the connections between mom and baby, mom and dad, and the wonderment of an older sibling. I have a few hats, diaper covers and headbands. Is there a special blanket or stuffy you would like to use? Make sure to let your photographer know.

Patience is key- these sessions can last between 1-2 hours and sometimes longer. The session is baby led which means that if the baby is hungry or fussy, I’ll wait for a feeding or a calm{er} baby. A good 50% of your session will be diaper changing, feeding and getting cozy.

What to wear: Go have your hair and makeup done or have someone come to you. Looking relaxed and your best at your session will help you relax. For clothing, I recommend neutral colors and comfort. What is most important is that you are comfortable. I am happy to discuss wardrobe with you further if you would like. Just let me know.

A checklist to prepare for your session:

  • Have extra water and snacks on hand, especially if there is an older sibling. Photoshoots can be long and tiring.

  • Have extra entertainment for an older sibling.

  • Have any toys or props on hand that you may want to use in the photo.

  • Have a change of clothes prepared… just in case.
